Philosophy of Athletics/Co-Curricular Afterschool Program

We view the youth of our community as a most precious part of its entire being. As such, it is our responsibility to educate them and provide experiences that, in turn, will enable them to grow and to reach their maximum potential.

Athletics and co-curricular after school activities provide a wholesome outlet for youthful energies.  In addition, they help youngsters explore and apply and further develop skills in various sports and lifetime recreational pursuits. We aim to provide such opportunities, not only for the outstanding athlete but for all. The athletic/co-curricular programs are varied and broad so as to involve young people of all ages and abilities, and promote competitive spirit, fitness, sportsmanship, team play, school loyalty, and positive attitudes among young people with regard to themselves, their peers, and other members of our city and country.

Our Athletes/Co-Curricular Participants Will: . .

Treat opponents with respect at all times.

Abide by the rules of the contest.

Respect the judgment of the officials.

Display no behavior to incite fans.

Accept seriously the responsibility and privilege of representing our school and community.

Display positive public action at all times.

Live up to the high standards of sportsmanship established by the Athletic Department.

Represent our school and community in the best manner possible by demonstrating class and respect during games as well as during trips and meals associated with the Athletic Department.

Our Coaches/Advisors Will: .

Always set a good example for athletes and fans to follow.

Exemplify the highest ethical and moral behavior.

Demand that sportsmanship is our number one priority.

Respect the judgment of officials.

Treat all participants with respect.

Develop and enforce penalties for participants who do not abide by sportsmanship standards.

High School Teams:

The high school level is an advanced level of play: students should start the season in proper condition, have the appropriate fundamental skills, and know basic strategies and all rules. Balboa Academy's goal at this level is to field the strongest, most competitive team. (Players may not play in every game at this level.) This level provides an opportunity for players to play at a collegiate level after Balboa Academy.

Middle School Teams:

The middle school level stresses learning and refining fundamental skills, game strategies, game knowledge, and rules. The middle school teams are a building block for the high school teams. Participation is the hallmark of the middle school level. At this level, it is anticipated that all team members will play in every game.

Elementary School Teams:

Every elementary school student is provided an opportunity to play on a team. The Elementary School has a no-cut policy. The emphasis at this level is on instruction, development, teamwork, fair play, and sportsmanship. Participation is a key component for elementary school teams. At this level, it is anticipated that all team members will play in every game.

When there are large numbers of students participating in a sport, there may be multiple teams based on ability level.
